Discernment in Financial Drought in Kingdom Entrepreneurship

Discover lessons from the widow in 1 Kings 17 on discernment, obedience, and provision in a financial drought in Kingdom entrepreneurship.

A Widow in Drought

In 1 Kings 17, Elijah’s story continues when the brook runs dry. God directs him to a widow who is also in a season of drought. She’s gathering sticks to prepare what she believes will be her last meal for herself and her son before they die.

When Elijah asks for water, she gives it. But when he asks for bread, she explains:

“I don’t have bread - only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I’m gathering sticks to make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it - and die.”

She had already accepted her end. Yet even in scarcity, she had a giving spirit. And when Elijah instructed her to bake the bread but give him a portion first, she obeyed. That act of bold obedience unlocked her miracle... the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry.

The Fruit of Bold Obedience

If I put myself in the widow’s shoes, I can’t ignore the weight of her decision. Giving what you believe to be your very last requires a faith that’s almost unexplainable. It’s more than generosity. It’s a radical trust in the word of God delivered through His servant.

This wasn’t desperation. This was discernment. Because here’s the truth... during droughts, not everyone who shows up at your door is sent by God. Some come to take. Some come to manipulate. But the ones God sends will always be tested and proven.

When the Son Fell Ill

What shook me even more is what happened next. The widow’s son becomes ill and dies. And in her grief, she questions Elijah: “Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?”

Elijah takes the boy, cries out to God, and stretches himself over the child three times. God hears his prayer, the boy revives, and Elijah delivers him back to his mother alive. And it was only then that the widow declared:

“Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”

Discernment in Seasons of Scarcity

This part gave me chills. Because the widow wasn’t gullible. She didn’t just hand over her last resources without discernment. She likely prayed. She likely tested Elijah’s spirit. And when tragedy struck, that moment exposed whether he was truly sent by God.

Her story reminds me of our current season. We are in an economic drought. Resources are stretched. Entrepreneurs are pressed. And in this environment, discernment is critical.

Not every opportunity, not every mentor, not every partnership is from God. But the right ones, the ones He ordains, will be tested, refined, and undeniably proven.

Discernment in Financial Drought in Kingdom Entrepreneurship

Kingdom entrepreneurship in a financial drought isn’t just about provision, it’s about discernment. Knowing who to build with, who to invest in, and who to trust with your vision.

The widow’s story reminds us that...

  • Generosity unlocks provision.

  • Discernment protects you from deception.

  • Testing reveals what is truly from God.

You won’t have to guess. When it’s God, He will make it undeniably clear.

Reflection Prompts

  • Where do you need discernment in this economic drought?

  • Who or what is God asking you to test before you invest?

  • How can you practice bold obedience even when resources feel scarce?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for teaching me that discernment is just as important as provision. In this season of drought, give me boldness to obey and wisdom to test what is truly from You. Protect me from false opportunities and align me with the partnerships and provision You’ve ordained. Amen.

Walking With Clarity

That’s why I created the God Idea Guide. It’s not just about ideas, it’s about discernment. This free clarity tool helps you test if what you’re building is a God idea or just a good idea.

Because the same way the widow needed discernment in her drought, we need discernment in ours. And clarity is a gift God gives to keep us aligned, fruitful, and protected.
